Krafton Pledges $250 Million More for India, Expanding Beyond Gaming into AI and Deep Tech

South Korean gaming giant Krafton, the company behind the immensely popular PUBG franchise and its localized Indian version, Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), has announced a significant expansion of its commitment to the Indian market. In a move that signals a strategic pivot beyond its core gaming business, Krafton plans to invest an additional $250 million over the next three to four years, with a keen focus on emerging technology sectors such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), robotics, and deep tech. This latest pledge dramatically escalates Krafton’s total planned investment in India, pushing it past the $500 million mark.

The announcement, made on Friday, underscores India’s growing importance as a strategic hub for global technology firms. This new investment is separate from Krafton’s previous commitments, including the substantial $670 million India-focused growth fund unveiled in December 2025 in collaboration with South Korean internet conglomerate Naver and investor Mirae Asset. At the initial close of that fund, Krafton had committed approximately $137 million. The $250 million infusion represents a direct, independent commitment from Krafton itself, reinforcing its long-term vision for the subcontinent.

India: A Strategic Epicenter for Krafton’s Growth

India’s appeal to Krafton is multifaceted, driven by its vast and rapidly expanding digital landscape. With over a billion internet subscribers and more than 700 million smartphone users, the nation presents an unparalleled market opportunity. Krafton initially capitalized on this potential by establishing a dominant presence in the mobile gaming sector, largely spearheaded by BGMI. This localized iteration of PUBG achieved remarkable success, surpassing an impressive 260 million downloads, demonstrating Krafton’s adeptness at understanding and catering to the Indian audience. Beyond gaming, Krafton has strategically leveraged its investments in Indian startups to diversify its business interests and tap into the country’s burgeoning tech ecosystem.

Navigating Regulatory Waters: A History of Challenges and Resilience

Krafton’s journey in India has not been without its hurdles, marked by significant regulatory challenges that tested the company’s adaptability and commitment. A pivotal moment came in 2020 when the Indian government, amidst escalating geopolitical tensions with China, banned PUBG Mobile along with hundreds of other Chinese-linked applications. This abrupt prohibition necessitated a strategic recalibration for Krafton.

In response to the ban and to navigate New Delhi’s concerns regarding data security and privacy, Krafton took decisive action. It severed ties with Tencent Games as the publisher for PUBG Mobile in India and re-engineered its operations. This led to the introduction of Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) in 2021, a revamped and localized version of the game. Crucially, Krafton also transitioned its India servers to Microsoft Azure’s cloud infrastructure, a move designed to address government apprehensions and ensure compliance with local data regulations.

However, the reprieve for BGMI was short-lived. In July 2022, the game was once again subjected to a ban. This second prohibition proved to be a significant setback. It was not until May 2023 that the federal government granted permission for BGMI to return to the Indian market, albeit on a three-month trial basis. Despite these intermittent disruptions, Krafton demonstrated remarkable resilience, continuing to invest in the franchise and its broader Indian operations. The company has since confirmed plans to launch BGMI Lite in India by the end of 2026, signaling a sustained commitment to the gaming segment.

Diversification Through Strategic Investments

Even in the face of regulatory turbulence, Krafton’s strategic vision for India remained steadfast. The company has actively pursued a diversification strategy, channeling significant capital into Indian startups across various sectors. To date, Krafton has backed approximately 18 companies, a portfolio that includes a notable number of gaming studios – around four to five. Prominent among its investments are leading Indian platforms and companies such as Nodwin Gaming, a prominent esports company; Loco, a live streaming and esports platform; Pratilipi, a self-publishing platform for vernacular content; Kuku FM, an audio storytelling platform; and One Impression, a digital influencer marketing platform. These investments reflect Krafton’s intent to build a robust and diversified business ecosystem in India, extending its influence beyond its gaming origins.

High-Level Engagement and Future Synergies

The timing of Krafton’s latest investment announcement is particularly noteworthy. The pledge followed a significant meeting between Krafton Chairman Chang Byung-gyu and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. The discussions reportedly focused on fostering closer collaboration between India and South Korea, particularly in the realms of gaming, technology, and other nascent sectors. This high-level engagement suggests a shared vision for leveraging technological advancements and fostering innovation through bilateral cooperation.

Strengthening Local Presence and Talent Development

In addition to its financial investments, Krafton has been actively building out its operational footprint and nurturing local talent within India. Last year, the company made a strategic acquisition of Pune-based Nautilus Mobile, the developer behind the popular "Real Cricket" franchise. This move not only expanded Krafton’s gaming portfolio but also integrated an established Indian development studio into its global network.

Furthermore, Krafton has launched the KIGI Academy, an industry-academia program designed to cultivate and train talent in game development and digital creation. This initiative highlights Krafton’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce within India, aligning with its long-term strategy of building a sustainable and innovative presence in the country.

Analysis: A Bold Bet on India’s Tech Future

Krafton’s escalating investment in India, particularly its ambitious pivot towards AI, robotics, and deep tech, represents a bold strategic maneuver. It signals a clear recognition of India’s potential not just as a consumer market but as a global hub for technological innovation and development.

Key Implications:

  • Diversification Beyond Gaming: This move signifies Krafton’s intent to evolve from a gaming-centric company to a broader technology conglomerate, leveraging its financial strength and market understanding to explore new frontiers. The focus on AI, robotics, and deep tech aligns with global technology trends and India’s growing capabilities in these areas.
  • Strategic Alignment with India’s Vision: The timing of the announcement, following the meeting with Prime Minister Modi, suggests a strategic alignment with India’s national priorities, which include promoting indigenous technology development and attracting foreign investment in high-tech sectors.
  • Talent Acquisition and Ecosystem Building: By investing in startups and establishing talent development programs like KIGI Academy, Krafton is positioning itself to tap into India’s vast pool of skilled professionals and contribute to the growth of its tech ecosystem.
  • De-risking Through Diversification: The company’s past regulatory challenges in India, particularly with BGMI, likely inform its strategy to diversify its business interests. By expanding into non-gaming sectors, Krafton can mitigate risks associated with a single industry and build a more resilient business model.
  • Competitive Landscape: This significant investment is expected to intensify competition among global tech players vying for a stake in India’s rapidly growing digital economy. It also positions Krafton as a serious contender in sectors beyond gaming, potentially attracting talent and partnerships away from rivals.
  • Long-Term Growth Potential: The sustained investment over several years indicates Krafton’s long-term commitment to India, viewing the country as a critical engine for future growth. This sustained presence could lead to the development of new technologies and services tailored to the Indian market and potentially for global export.

Krafton’s increased financial commitment and strategic diversification into cutting-edge technologies underscore its confidence in India’s long-term economic and technological trajectory. The company appears poised to play a significant role in shaping India’s emerging tech landscape, moving beyond its celebrated gaming legacy to become a broader technology innovator.
