When the server’s PHP interpreter processes this request, it executes the contents of the malicious script, granting the attacker the ability to run arbitrary code with the same privileges as the web server process. This effectively gives them a backdoor into the server, allowing for data theft, website defacement, malware distribution, or further network intrusion.
