Even Healthcare Secures $50 Million Series B Funding Led by Khosla Ventures to Reimagine Healthcare Economics in India

Even Healthcare, an Indian startup aiming to fundamentally alter how hospitals generate revenue and how medical professionals are compensated, has successfully closed a $50 million all-equity Series B funding round. The investment was spearheaded by prominent venture capital firm Khosla Ventures, with significant participation from Alpha Wave. This latest infusion of capital propels Even Healthcare’s valuation to $300 million, a threefold increase from its valuation just 18 months prior, and brings its total funding to over $120 million since its inception.

The substantial financial backing signifies strong investor confidence in Even Healthcare’s disruptive business model, which directly confronts the deeply entrenched fee-for-service healthcare system prevalent in India. Traditionally, Indian hospitals have been incentivized to maximize patient bills through an accumulation of tests, procedures, and extended hospital stays, regardless of their absolute necessity. Even Healthcare is pioneering a paradigm shift, prioritizing patient well-being and optimal health outcomes over the volume of services rendered.

A Paradigm Shift in Healthcare Incentives

At the core of Even Healthcare’s mission is the recalibration of incentives within the healthcare ecosystem. The company challenges the prevailing model where financial gains are intrinsically linked to increased utilization of medical services. Instead, Even Healthcare is architecting a system that rewards better clinical outcomes and efficient care delivery. This approach is particularly revolutionary in a country like India, the world’s most populous nation, where healthcare access and affordability remain significant challenges for a large segment of the population.

Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, articulated the firm’s deep-seated conviction in Even Healthcare’s vision. He emphasized that the startup’s strategy transcends merely addressing isolated issues within a fragmented healthcare system. "Even’s approach goes beyond fixing individual parts of a fragmented healthcare system by bringing financing, technology, and care delivery together," Khosla stated in a prepared release. "The goal is to reward better health outcomes rather than greater use of healthcare services. The clinical and economic results so far give us conviction that this can become an important new model for healthcare in India and beyond."

Khosla Ventures’ continued commitment, extending from Even Healthcare’s seed round in 2021, underscores the firm’s belief in the scalability and impact of the startup’s model. The Silicon Valley-based venture capital firm’s decision to double down on its investment aligns with Even Healthcare’s strategic expansion into building and operating its own hospitals. This vertical integration provides Even Healthcare with unparalleled control over patient care quality, cost management, and the implementation of its value-based care principles.

From Partner Hospitals to Owned Facilities: A Strategic Evolution

Even Healthcare’s journey began with a partnership-based model, where it relied on a network of affiliated hospitals to provide care for its members. However, this arrangement soon revealed inherent conflicts with the company’s core values. Mayank Banerjee, co-founder and CEO of Even Healthcare, shared in an interview that the startup’s leadership began to question this model after observing instances where patients were subjected to tests or recommended surgeries that the company deemed unnecessary.

"We think patients are getting not only a bad experience, but insurers are getting a bad economic deal. And as a result, we decided to fix it by building our own hospitals," Banerjee explained. This realization marked a pivotal moment for the company, prompting a strategic pivot towards direct control over the care delivery process.

The fruits of this strategic shift are already evident. Even Healthcare has successfully established and operated two hospitals in Bengaluru. Remarkably, both facilities achieved operational profitability, excluding depreciation, within their first year of operation. This rapid financial success, achieved by a healthcare facility within its initial year, is a testament to the efficacy of their cost-conscious and outcome-oriented approach. Buoyed by this success and the fresh capital infusion, Even Healthcare plans to launch five additional hospitals in Bengaluru over the next six months. The company’s expansion strategy involves leasing hospital buildings on 20-year agreements, followed by significant investment in fitting out the facilities and acquiring state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Redefining Physician and Staff Compensation

A cornerstone of Even Healthcare’s innovative model lies in its compensation structure for medical professionals and hospital staff. Unlike traditional hospitals where doctors’ earnings can be influenced by the volume of procedures performed, Even Healthcare compensates its doctors with fixed salaries. This approach liberates physicians from the pressure to overtreat or recommend unnecessary interventions.

However, the company does not entirely eschew performance-based incentives. Banerjee elaborated that doctors can earn bonuses tied to patient-reported clinical outcomes. This means that their additional earnings are directly linked to the success of their treatments and the positive health improvements experienced by their patients, rather than the quantity of services billed.

This philosophy of aligning incentives with patient well-being extends to hospital management and administrative staff. Compensation for managers is not linked to the number of procedures performed. Instead, they receive salaries supplemented by company-wide incentives, fostering a collective responsibility for the hospital’s overall performance and patient satisfaction. Similarly, marketing teams are tasked with patient acquisition and engagement, with their success measured by the number of patients served and their satisfaction, rather than the revenue generated per patient.

Furthermore, in a move to foster a deep sense of ownership and long-term commitment, every employee at Even Healthcare, including doctors, nurses, and administrative personnel, receives equity in the company. This equitable distribution of ownership ensures that all team members are invested in the startup’s sustained growth and success, aligning their individual goals with the overarching mission of delivering high-quality, value-driven healthcare.

Revenue Streams and a Focus on Prevention

Even Healthcare’s revenue generation is multifaceted. The primary source of income is direct patient payments for treatments and services. However, the company also cultivates robust relationships with insurance providers. Recognizing the potential for mutual benefit, Even Healthcare is actively collaborating with insurer partners to develop innovative payment models. A key area of exploration is a compensation structure that rewards Even Healthcare for preventing hospitalizations and managing chronic conditions effectively, rather than merely for providing treatment for acute episodes. This proactive approach to healthcare has the potential to significantly reduce overall healthcare costs for both patients and insurers.

The company’s commitment to data-driven care and transparency is evident in its rigorous tracking of patient recovery. Even Healthcare employs established medical scoring systems to monitor patient progress post-treatment. For instance, in the case of knee replacement surgeries, the Oxford Knee Score is utilized to quantitatively measure improvements in pain levels and mobility. The startup openly publishes these outcomes on its website, providing valuable benchmarks against other healthcare systems and demonstrating the efficacy of its treatment protocols.

Demonstrable Impact and Future Aspirations

Even Healthcare’s operational performance metrics offer compelling evidence of its disruptive model’s success. The company reports an unplanned readmission rate of less than 1%, a figure significantly lower than the industry benchmark of 8% to 15%. This suggests a higher standard of initial care and more effective post-discharge management. Additionally, Even Healthcare claims its patients spend an average of 40% less time in the hospital, contributing to both patient comfort and cost savings. Cumulatively, these efficiencies have reportedly saved insurers over ₹500 million (approximately $5.27 million) to date.

Jai Sajnani, a partner at Khosla Ventures, highlighted the early performance of Even Healthcare’s hospitals as a critical factor in the firm’s decision to lead the funding round. "We look forward to helping the Even team put quality care within reach of every family in Bengaluru and across India," Sajnani remarked.

Despite these promising indicators, Even Healthcare is currently operating at a loss. Regulatory filings reveal a net loss of ₹902 million (approximately $9.50 million) in fiscal year 2025, an increase of nearly 25% compared to the previous year, on revenues of ₹272 million (approximately $2.86 million). This financial situation is not uncommon for growth-stage companies investing heavily in expansion and infrastructure development.

In August, Even Healthcare underwent a restructuring that led to the layoff of approximately 350 employees. Banerjee acknowledged the difficult nature of this decision, stating that affected employees received comprehensive severance packages, extended health insurance coverage, and accelerated equity vesting. This move, while challenging, is often a necessary step for startups to streamline operations and focus resources on core growth strategies.

Currently, Even Healthcare employs around 650 individuals, including a dedicated team of approximately 300 full-time doctors. Since its launch in 2021, the startup has amassed a membership base of roughly 250,000 individuals and has facilitated over 750,000 patient interactions, encompassing consultations, diagnostic tests, and surgical procedures.

While Even Healthcare possesses the capacity to achieve profitability in the short term by halting expansion efforts, the company’s strategic imperative remains focused on aggressive growth and broader patient reach. Banerjee indicated that the startup is prioritizing expansion over immediate profitability, underscoring its long-term vision to become a dominant force in value-based healthcare not only in India but potentially on a global scale. "Right now, we’re investing in growth and serving more patients," Banerjee affirmed. The company has not yet provided a definitive timeline for achieving profitability, signaling its commitment to its ambitious expansion plans.
