The New York and Bengaluru-headquartered firm announced today it has raised $9.5 million in a Series A funding round, spearheaded by Aramco Ventures, the venture capital arm of Saudi Aramco. The funding round saw participation from existing investor Lightspeed India, alongside new strategic investors including Godrej Industries Group, Cisco, Francis Family Fund, and Volta Circle. This infusion of capital brings Mitti Labs’ total funding to $12.5 million, building upon a $3 million seed round that closed in July 2024. The company’s ambitious trajectory underscores the growing recognition of the critical intersection between food security, climate change, and technological innovation in agriculture.

Rice, a cornerstone of global food security, sustains over half the world’s population. However, its cultivation is inherently water-intensive, demanding vast quantities of this precious resource. Methane, a potent greenhouse gas, has a warming potential significantly higher than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, making its reduction a key priority in global climate mitigation efforts.

The partnership with Aramco Ventures also opens doors for Mitti Labs to leverage the venture capital firm’s extensive network within carbon markets and potentially explore collaborations with Saudi Aramco itself in the future.

"Obviously, Aramco is one of the largest companies in the world, and being able to have them as a partner and potential customer over time is a really interesting position for us to be in," Laguarta stated, emphasizing the strategic advantage of this new relationship.

H3 Expansion into Southeast Asia

The newly acquired capital will fuel Mitti Labs’ ambitious expansion plans. The company is set to launch operations in the Philippines later this year, followed by further expansion into Indonesia and other key Southeast Asian markets in 2027. This strategic move is designed to allow Mitti Labs to tap into compliance carbon markets, complementing its current operations in the voluntary market. Moreover, this expansion will necessitate the adaptation of Mitti Labs’ operating model to suit the diverse farming systems and irrigation networks prevalent across these new regions.

"We’re really a data company at the end of the day," Laguarta reiterated, underscoring the foundational nature of their work. "When you do these expansions, you’re generating and gathering data from very different ecosystems." This continuous data acquisition and analysis will be critical for refining their AI models and ensuring the scalability and effectiveness of their solutions across varied agricultural landscapes.

The expansion into Southeast Asia represents not just a geographical growth spurt but also a significant step in Mitti Labs’ mission to provide data-driven climate solutions to a broader spectrum of agricultural communities.
